Kejetia Market fire: Investigative committee submits report



The committee constituted by the Minister of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development (MLGDRD) Daniel Botwe, to investigate recent fire outbreak at the Kumasi Kejetia Market on 14th March 2024 has completed its work and submitted it’s findings report to the ministry in Accra 11th May 2023.


The report includes conclusions and suggestions, among other things, to prevent a repeat of the disaster and to guarantee the market is operated, maintained, and managed efficiently overall.



The five-member committee, led by Professor Theophilus Adjei-Kumi, a lecturer at the Department of Construction Technology and Management at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), includes Emelia Ayebeng Botchway, regional cordinating director at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, Mr. Francis Koffie-ESQ, a private attorney and managing director of M/S Koffie and Partners, Mr. Kofi Ampong, a valuer, property manager, and real estate consultant, Mr. Daniel Kwaku Denteh, the deputy director general of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and Mr. Kofi Ampong.


Before, the committee report was submited to facilitate government’s next line of action, GHone news can report on authority that management of the market has allowed some traders to wire their shops.



Members of combined traders Association in the market have started raising red flags about the development.


Ruben Ameh spokesperson for the alleged management of the market through one Isaac has been collecting monies from the traders for wiring of their shops while some of the traders decided to buy their own wires for wiring of their shop without any technical advice.


The trader union leaders are planning to petition the regional minister Simon Osei Mensah and possibly the local government and Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.


Meanwhile, general manager of the Kumasi market limited Kofi Duffuor when contacted by Kumasi based Abusua FM refused to comment on the matter stating the matter is under internal investigation.
