NPP Super Delegates Congress is now in session

The Super Delegates Congress of the New Patriotic Party is now in session around the nation.

Before the party's conference this November, the NPP is attempting to reduce the field of candidates from 10 to 5.

The ten candidates are:

  1. Alan Kyerematen, former Trade Minister
  2. Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Former Agriculture Minister
  3. Kennedy Agyapong, MP for Assin Central
  4. Joe Ghartey, former Railways Minister
  5. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former party General Secretary
  6. Kwadwo Poku, an energy expert
  7. Boakye Agyarko, former Energy Minister
  8. Kofi Konadu Apraku, former Trade Minister
  9. Francis Addai Nimoh, former Member of Parliament for Mampong.
  10. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President

There will be 900 delegates present for the countrywide election.

The top five candidates who receive the most votes will participate in the NPP's primary in November for the position of party flagbearer for the general election in 2024.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, who is ineligible to run for a third term under Ghanaian law, is now in power with the NPP, and the primary victor will be the favorite to succeed him or her.

The competition is expected to be fierce, with Alan Kyerematen and Dr. Bawumia being the front-runners. However it's interesting to note that Kennedy Agyapong has been gaining support lately and could end up becoming a surprise contender.

The upcoming election will be a litmus test for the NPP because the results will determine how well the party does in the general election of 2024.

A candidate who can bring the party together and win over a wide range of voters will need to be chosen by the party.
