VRA has issued an alert regarding potential spills at Kpong and Akosombo dams in the near future

Residents downstream of the Akosombo and Kpong dams have been advised by the Volta River Authority (VRA) to be cautious and take precautions in the event of a controlled overflow in the coming days.

This is because of the recent, constant rains, which have caused the water levels in the two dams to steadily climb.

The Corporate Affairs and External Relations Section released a press release on September 12, 2023, and it quoted the VRA as saying;

The Akosombo dam's inflow pattern and water level have been steadily rising, the Volta River Authority (VRA) wants to alert the public.

The Volta River Authority has properly alerted important stakeholders of this development in accordance with our emergency preparedness plan and standard operating procedures.

If the situation worsens, it may be necessary to start controlled spilling in the next few days, according to the statement, given the reservoir level as of right now.

As a result, VRA wants to warn everyone who lives near the Volta River and downstream of our Akosombo and Kpong Dams to be vigilant and to take the appropriate safety precautions.

To ensure a timely response to any emergency that may develop, VRA will continue to monitor the situation, communicate with our key stakeholders, and offer regular updates.
