Minority skeptical about government's new assurance on La General hospital

The La General Hospital project has been a topic of discussion in Parliament, with the Minority expressing doubts about the government's ability to complete the project.

Government's Efforts to Resume Work on the Project

During the presentation of the 2024 Budget, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta announced that the contractor for the stalled health project would resume work next week, following assurances from Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang Manu that the government had secured €50 million locally to fund the reconstruction.

Minority's Doubts and Criticisms

However, Minority Chief Whip, Governs Agbodza, has expressed his anger and skepticism about the government's ability to fully fund the project to completion. He criticized the Finance Minister's failure to mention the suspension of the Bank of Ghana headquarters and pumping that money into the La General Hospital. He suggested that part of the $250 million meant for the BoG head office could have been injected into the completion of the La General Hospital. He also pointed out that when a project is under Government of Ghana support, it means it's under life support, and he doesn't foresee the government having €50 million easily to pump into that project.

Agbodza also criticized the government's failure to allocate funds for coastal defense measures in the budget. The government had announced a GH¢220 million package to support persons displaced by the Akosombo dam spillage and flood-related efforts. However, Agbodza questioned the adequacy of this amount and wondered what it was supposed to do.

Importance of Adequate Funding and Comprehensive Discussion

The La General Hospital project is an important one, and it is essential that the government provides adequate funding to ensure its completion. The government must also allocate sufficient funds for coastal defense measures to protect those who are vulnerable to flooding and other natural disasters. It is imperative that a comprehensive discussion takes place on these issues to find workable solutions for all concerned.
