Fan verbally attacked Chris Hughton, GFA clarifies it was not a physical attack

We would like to address the recent allegations surrounding an incident involving Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton following Ghana’s loss to Cape Verde in its opening Afcon game on Sunday, January 14, 2024.

After Ghana's 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde, there were reports on social media claiming that head coach Chris Hughton had been physically assaulted by an upset fan upon the team's arrival at the hotel. It was also alleged that diplomats had to intervene and that the fan had been taken into police custody.

However, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has clarified that these claims are exaggerated and blown out of proportion. According to the GFA, the fan expressed his displeasure over the match's outcome and urged the coach to resign, but there was no physical altercation, and no arrest was made.

It is important to maintain accuracy and refrain from sensationalizing such incidents, especially in the age of social media where information can spread rapidly.

As Ghana's Black Stars regroup for their upcoming match against Egypt on Thursday, January 18, 2024, it is crucial for all stakeholders to focus on supporting the team as they strive to turn their tournament around.

We urge fans to express their passion in a respectful manner and to continue rallying behind the team as they aim to bounce back from a challenging start to their Afcon campaign.
