Judicial Service intervenes in alleged state land sale saga

The Judicial Service of Ghana has provided clarification on the circumstances surrounding its agreement with the Ministry of Works and Housing to redevelop state lands allocated to it. In a press release dated January 16, the Service emphasized that the release of land to the Ministry was conducted in accordance with due process.

The agreement, dated 17 February, 2023, was the result of several meetings between representatives of the Government, Judicial Service, and the Ministry of Works and Housing regarding the two properties in question. The statement further asserted that the developments on the said land are covered by an agreement concluded between the Judicial Service and the Ministry of Works and Housing.

This response comes in light of allegations made by Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, claiming that the land had been sold to a private developer. Mr. Agyapong alleged collusion between a former Chief Justice and the Sector Minister in the sale of the official residence of the late Justice Samuel Marful-Sau.

However, the Judicial Service has refuted these claims, citing a letter received from the Ministry of Works and Housing on December 28, 2022, expressing the desire to implement a Government Redevelopment Scheme within Onyasia Close, Roman Ridge, Accra. The properties in question, previously occupied by the late Justice Samuel Marful-Sau and His Lordship Justice Victor Ofoe, were within the re-development enclave.

The plan under the Government Redevelopment Scheme aimed to increase the housing stock in the enclave within a two-year period from the date of handover of the properties to the Ministry. Upon completion of the project, four housing units were to be allocated to the Judicial Service for use by Superior Court Judges. The Judicial Service accepted the offer, recognizing the serious accommodation deficit faced by the Judiciary and emphasizing the security and safety requirements of Judges. It was also convinced that the project would be beneficial to the Judicial Service.

The Judicial Service of Ghana has sought to clarify its position on the redevelopment agreement with the Ministry of Works and Housing, emphasizing that all actions were undertaken in accordance with due process and in consideration of the Judiciary's accommodation needs.
