Local level polls: Conducting Run-off Elections to Break Ties - EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced its plan to conduct elections in specific electoral areas on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. This decision comes in the wake of recorded ties during the recently concluded District Level Elections (DLE).

The EC revealed that 20 electoral areas reported identical results for assembly members, while 41 other electoral areas experienced the same outcome in the unit committee race.

In a statement signed by the Acting Head of Public Affairs at the Electoral Commission, Michael Boadu, it was clarified that run-off elections will be necessary in these areas to resolve the ties and determine the winners.

The upcoming elections will be held at all the Polling Stations in the Electoral Areas where ties were identified. Notable electoral areas where run-off elections will take place include Legba-Klikpko in the Volta Region, Akwamufie and Awosoase in the Eastern Region, Adantia in the Bono Region, Bonya in the Bono East Region, Effiduase West and Konya-Brehoma in the Ashanti Region, among others.

The District Level Elections conducted nationwide on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, were marked by certain challenges. However, the EC remains committed to ensuring a fair and conclusive electoral process by addressing the ties through run-off elections.

As the electoral process continues to unfold, it is imperative for all stakeholders and citizens to uphold the principles of democracy and actively participate in these crucial run-off elections to determine the rightful winners in the affected electoral areas. The EC urges all eligible voters to exercise their civic responsibility and contribute to the democratic process.
