We have received concerning news from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) regarding the intention of doctors to go on strike on Wednesday, March 13, 2024. The reason behind this decision stems from accommodation challenges faced by more than 20 of their colleagues who have received eviction notices to leave their current residences.
In response to this alarming development, an emergency meeting was convened, during which the doctors unanimously agreed to proceed with the strike in solidarity with their affected colleagues. The leadership of the Association has asserted that its members are being forced out of their bungalows, which have purportedly been sold to private developers.
It is important to note that the impending strike has received the endorsement of the Ghana Medical Association. However, it is essential to clarify that the strike action will only impact new admissions, as all doctors have collectively committed to adhering to the directive issued by the Association.
According to reports, the doctors were reportedly given a week ultimatum by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council to vacate their existing residences. Dr. Paa Kwasi Baidoo, the Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Medical Association, expressed deep concern over the abrupt displacement of hospital staff from their homes. He emphasized the prior agreement with Manhyia Palace for new accommodations before the land handover, which regrettably appears to have been disregarded.
The situation at hand underscores the critical importance of addressing accommodation challenges faced by healthcare professionals. It is imperative for all relevant stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue aimed at finding a swift and equitable resolution to this pressing issue.
We urge all parties involved to prioritize the well-being of the hospital staff and work towards a mutually satisfactory outcome. The dedication and commitment of healthcare professionals should be met with reciprocal support, including the provision of suitable and secure accommodation.
We will continue to monitor the situation closely and remain hopeful that a resolution can be reached expediently, ensuring that the focus remains on delivering essential medical care to those in need.
