Three teacher unions declare nationwide strike

In a significant development, three prominent teacher unions in Ghana have jointly declared a nationwide strike set to commence on Wednesday, March 20, 2024. The unions involved in this decisive action are the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT).

This decision has been prompted by what the unions perceive as the government's disregard for their working conditions. Among the key grievances cited are the withholding of teachers' salaries, unilateral alterations to timetables without prior consultation with the unions, and delays in the distribution of laptops to teachers.

Addressing the media, Isaac Owusu, the National President of GNAT, emphasized the pressing nature of these concerns. He highlighted the significance of ensuring that all teachers receive laptops and expressed dismay at the frequent changes to the school calendar without engaging in constructive dialogue with the teacher unions. Additionally, he raised concerns about the obstruction of teachers' salaries by the Office of the Special Prosecutor, bypassing established procedures.

Owusu underscored the unions' unwavering support for their members and announced the decision to initiate a nationwide industrial action effective from Wednesday, March 20, 2024. This move is intended to assert their demands in light of prolonged delays and unmet assurances from the employer and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.

The implications of this strike action are substantial, with potential repercussions for the education sector and the broader community. It is imperative for all stakeholders to recognize the gravity of the situation and engage in meaningful dialogue to seek a resolution that addresses the legitimate concerns of the teaching fraternity.

As this situation unfolds, it is crucial for all parties involved to approach this matter with a sense of urgency and a commitment to finding a mutually agreeable outcome. The impact of this industrial action extends beyond the immediate stakeholders and underscores the significance of upholding the welfare and professional dignity of teachers.

We will continue to monitor developments related to this strike action and provide updates as the situation evolves.
