Volunteers clash with officials over unpaid allowances after 13th African Games

The conclusion of the 13th African Games has been marred by a troubling incident at the volunteer hostel, where a dispute has arisen between the volunteers and officials regarding their allowances.

Allegations have been made by the volunteers, claiming that their allowances of GHC2,000 each have been withheld, in addition to the promised transport fare of GHC500 each. They further assert that officials forcibly evacuated them from their hostels, compelling them to depart for their respective homes.

According to one volunteer, "We the Volunteers for the 13th African Games have been denied our due including TNT and are being forced to leave the Hostels immediately." The volunteer went on to explain that the agreement was for a payment of GHC2,500, with an additional GHC500 for TNT and GHC2,000 as an allowance or appreciation package. Despite assurances from officials, they were informed to vacate the hostels without receiving their due compensation.

Confirming the incident, one of the volunteers, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed disappointment, stating, "We have been denied our allowances, the situation here is sad. Colleagues are disappointed. The quality of food they gave us was nothing to write home about. Where will we get money to return to our homes."

The situation escalated to the point where a police officer stationed at the Pentagon hostel reportedly fired a gun shot.

The reported grievances and distressing turn of events at the volunteer hostel following the African Games are indeed concerning. It is imperative that the relevant authorities address these issues promptly and ensure that the volunteers receive their rightful allowances and support. Such incidents detract from the positive impact of events like the African Games and should be thoroughly investigated and resolved to uphold the integrity of future volunteer programs.

We hope for a swift and amicable resolution for all involved in this unfortunate situation.
