Police officer on night duty crashed to death at Winneba-Kasoa Highway checkpoint

We regret to report a tragic incident that occurred at the Winneba-Kasoa checkpoint, resulting in the loss of a dedicated police officer's life. The unfortunate event took place overnight at Kantanka Junction along the highway.

According to information gathered at the scene, the fatal accident involved three vehicles: a Kia truck with registration number GR-6419-N, a trailer with registration number GE-5468-22, and a fuel tanker bearing the number plate GY-2186-13.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the Kia truck, traveling towards Mankessim Road, collided with a police barricade, subsequently hitting a trailer and a fuel tanker parked nearby. The resulting chain of collisions led to the vehicles veering out of control and tragically running over the police officer.

It was reported by a witness that the driver of the Kia truck had been asleep at the wheel leading up to the initial crash. Local residents attested to hearing a loud crash, prompting them to rush to the scene from their homes.

As a result of the accident, three individuals aboard the vehicles sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased police officer has been transferred to the hospital's mortuary for autopsy and preservation.

Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen officer during this difficult time. We urge all road users to prioritize safety and vigilance while on the roads to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
