Anxiety at Koforidua PROTOA station as deadly clash looms

The Koforidua Peace PROTOA station is currently facing a situation of heightened anxiety as reports have surfaced regarding potential disruptions to the upcoming handing-over ceremony for the newly elected interim executives of the driver’s association.

This development comes in the wake of a Koforidua High Court order issued on June 28, 2024, which mandated a by-election to elect interim executives for a six-month term. The court’s ruling stemmed from the unconstitutional nature of Yaw Adogo’s continued tenure as chairman of the union since 2018, thus necessitating the need for bye-elections.

While allegations of misappropriation against Yaw Adogo were dismissed due to lack of evidence, the court order was duly complied with. Subsequently, a secret ballot election was conducted on June 28, 2024, resulting in the election of interim executives to serve from June to December 2024.

However, concerns have arisen regarding potential disruptions to the upcoming ceremony, with intelligence reports indicating that opponents have allegedly hired individuals to disrupt the event and attack the new executives. This has prompted the Chairman-elect to request police protection for the swearing-in and handing-over ceremony.

In light of these developments, it is imperative for all relevant authorities, including the Ghana Police Service, National Security, and BNI, to take proactive measures to prevent any potential violence. The commitment of the new executives to maintaining peace and order within the association should be duly acknowledged and supported.

It is crucial for all stakeholders to work collaboratively in ensuring a smooth transition and upholding the principles of democracy and rule of law. Any form of disruption or violence not only undermines the integrity of the association but also poses a threat to the safety and well-being of its members.

As we approach the scheduled ceremony on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, it is our collective responsibility to uphold the values of peace, respect for due process, and adherence to legal mandates. Let us stand together in support of a peaceful and orderly transition of leadership within the Peace PROTOA, Koforidua.

We trust that the relevant authorities will take the necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of all involved parties, thereby upholding the spirit of democracy and justice.
