Lands Ministry denies GH₵5.3m compensation claim over Bulgarian Embassy demolition

In recent news, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has come forward to address and refute allegations regarding a supposed payment of GHS 5,383,000.00 to the Bulgarian Embassy. These allegations, put forth by the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, claim that the government is liable for the payment following the demolition of the embassy's building in 2017 due to a land dispute.

However, in a statement dated July 18, 2024, the Ministry has categorically denied these allegations, labeling them as false and baseless. According to the Ministry, the land in question was not granted to the Bulgarian Embassy by the government, and the demolition was not carried out by government authorities. The government's intervention in the matter was solely due to its involvement with a Diplomatic Mission in Ghana.

The Ministry goes on to clarify that the government is not obligated to pay the amount of GHS 5,383,000.00, contrary to Ablakwa's claims. The Land Valuation Division of the Lands Commission valued the unexpired term at this amount, but it is to be paid by Mr. Jojo Hagan in accordance with the recommendations of the Sole Inquirer. The government, however, is still engaging with the parties involved to ensure that the compensation is paid as per the above recommendation.

It is emphasized that any assertion claiming that the government is required to pay this compensation to the Embassy is false and potentially misleading. The Ministry asserts that such claims only serve to mislead the public and create disaffection for the Government, as the established facts of this matter are well-known and easily discernible.

The Bulgarian Embassy, located at Kakramadu Road, Plot No. 10, East Cantonments in Accra, was demolished by a private developer in 2017.

This statement from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources serves to provide clarity on the matter and dispel any misinformation that may be circulating. As with any issue of this nature, it is important to rely on verified information and official statements to understand the true nature of events.
