NCA responds to public backlash over high internet data pricing

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has recently come under fire from social media users due to the high pricing of internet data in the country. This issue gained traction over the weekend when an individual on social media claimed that MTN's designation as a Significant Market Power (SMP) was the reason behind the high cost of data.

In response to public concerns, the NCA issued a statement on July 21, clarifying that the classification of MTN as an SMP is not intended to hinder its operations, but rather to ensure fair competition in the telecommunications industry. The NCA emphasized that measures such as asymmetric interconnection rates, tariff parity, and technology neutrality are aimed at promoting competition, encouraging innovation, and protecting consumers' interests. These measures are designed to enable other operators to compete effectively, offer sustainable pricing, and invest in improving service quality.

Furthermore, the NCA referenced a publication by cable.co.uk, which reported that Ghana ranked 3rd in Africa for having the cheapest pricing for mobile internet data. Additionally, the report ranked Ghana 2nd in the West African region.

It is evident that the NCA is committed to fostering a competitive telecommunications market and safeguarding consumer interests. The measures implemented by the NCA aim to create a level playing field for all operators, ultimately benefiting consumers through improved service quality and pricing. While criticisms regarding data pricing persist, it is important to consider the NCA's efforts to promote fair competition and protect consumer choice in the telecommunications industry.
