An inferno in the early hours of Wednesday, September 11, gutted three auto part shops and a cold store on the Kamara-Mamprobi stretch in Accra.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire is suspected to have originated from a faulty electrical system in one of the shops, resulting in the rapid spread of flames to adjacent shops.
Speaking to Channel One news, Divisional Officer 3 in charge of operations at the Dansoman Fire station, William Sackey, disclosed that upon arrival at the scene, the fire team encountered challenges with the main service wire close to the shops emitting electrical shocks. This necessitated a request for backup to effectively contain the fire.
Sackey also mentioned that the presence of a large crowd posed a hindrance to their firefighting efforts, prompting the need to seek police assistance.
"At approximately 5.45 am this morning, we received reports of a fire outbreak at Kamara near the Apostolic Church. Our team was promptly dispatched to the scene where we observed three containers engulfed in flames amidst electrical hazards from the main service wire. Our personnel immediately commenced firefighting operations and subsequently called for backup from our Circle Fire Station to augment our resources," stated DO3 Sackey.
He further reassured the public that investigations are underway to determine the root cause of the inferno.
The aftermath of such incidents serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of adhering to electrical safety measures and the critical role of emergency response teams in mitigating disasters. Our thoughts are with the affected businesses, and we commend the swift response of the firefighting and law enforcement personnel in bringing the situation under control.
As we await further details from the investigative authorities, let us collectively prioritize preventive measures to avert similar occurrences in the future.
