The commissioning of the ultra-modern fishing harbour at Jamestown, in the Greater Accra Region, marks a significant milestone in Ghana's efforts to boost its fishing industry and reduce reliance on imported fish. President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of this new facility in achieving these goals during his speech at the commissioning ceremony.
With features such as a cold storage unit, a fish processing center, a fire and police station, and a crèche, the Jamestown Fishing Harbour is poised to create approximately 4,000 direct and indirect job opportunities for the youth in the Ga community. This development is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy and the livelihoods of the fisherfolk and traders in Jamestown.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted the potential of the project to enhance fish catches and minimize post-harvest losses. He expressed confidence in the transformative effects of the harbour, stating, "It will create jobs, empower the economy, and revitalize the lives of the fisherfolk and traders of Jamestown. We will inject new energies into the heart of this community. I have no doubt that its benefits will ripple across the nation."
In addition to the president's remarks, the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, made a passionate appeal to the government to prioritize the employment of Ga youth in the operation of the Jamestown Fishing Harbour. Recognizing the historical connection of the Ga Dangbe Youth to the land and waters of Jamestown, he urged the Ministry of Transportation to ensure that a quota is allocated for their benefit and participation in this commercial venture.
The commissioning of the Jamestown Fishing Harbour represents a significant step towards modernizing Ghana's fishing industry and empowering local communities. As the facility becomes fully operational, it is expected to contribute to increased productivity, economic growth, and improved livelihoods for the people of Jamestown and beyond. The government's commitment to ensuring the inclusion and empowerment of the youth in this endeavor underscores its potential for sustainable impact and positive change.
