Amnesty International Ghana Calls for Independent Investigation into Alleged Police Brutality

Amnesty International Ghana has called for a full-scale independent investigation into the alleged police manhandling of protesters who were arrested during the recent Democracy Hub demonstration against galamsey. The human rights organization expressed concern about the continuous abuse of citizens during protests, warning that it could further diminish the already shrinking civic space before, during, and after the upcoming general elections.

Genevieve Partington, Country Director of Amnesty International Ghana, emphasized the need for a review of laws regarding protests in the country to ensure that the rights of citizens are not violated. In a statement to Citi News, she stated, "We are requesting a list of all detained protesters and their locations so that we can be granted access to them, ensuring they receive the necessary care and basic human rights. We are also appealing for compensation for those who were unlawfully arrested in accordance with the law of Ghana."

The recent court hearing saw more members of the Democracy Hub, including activist Felicity Nelson, being remanded in police custody overnight after their hearing was adjourned by Circuit Court 6. The court postponed the session until Thursday, September 25, to allow the prosecution time to respond to the defendants’ bail applications. This development brings the total number of remanded protesters to 53, all of whom were arrested during demonstrations that occurred between September 21 and 23.

The protests, organized by Democracy Hub to oppose illegal mining (galamsey), resulted in violent confrontations between demonstrators and the police at the 37 Intersection in Accra. Genevieve Partington stressed the need for an independent investigation into the matter and urged for actions to be taken to prevent such injustice and inhumane treatment of citizens from happening again. She added, "It’s time the government took these issues seriously and ensured law and order as we approach the elections in December."

Amnesty International Ghana's call for an independent investigation reflects a commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring accountability for any alleged misconduct. It underscores the importance of protecting citizens' rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, particularly in the lead-up to significant national events such as elections. As the situation unfolds, it is crucial for authorities to address these concerns and uphold the principles of justice and human rights in Ghana.
