Christian Methodist teacher attacked by students for preventing exam malpractice

We are deeply troubled by the recent reports of violence against teachers at Christian Methodist Senior High School, (Chrimeto) in New-Aplaku, Greater Accra Region. According to the teachers, they were allegedly attacked by students for upholding examination integrity during the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The disturbing incident, captured in an amateur video, shows students chasing and pelting the teachers with stones and sachet water. One of the teachers, Walter Yesutor Adanunyo, was seen fleeing for his safety in the video.

Mr. Walter Yesutor Adanunyo recounted the harrowing experience, explaining that they were alerted to a mob at the school’s gate by a concerned student who claimed they intended to harm him for being strict in the exam room. Despite involving the headmaster and the police patrol team, the situation escalated the following day when students, emboldened by the absence of law enforcement, launched an attack with projectiles.

The teachers, outnumbered and under threat, made an attempt to leave the premises but were intercepted by students who questioned Mr. Adanunyo's commitment to preventing cheating during exams.

While it is reported that the police arrested four students, Mr. Adanunyo expressed uncertainty about whether they were among those who confronted him. This deeply concerning incident brings to mind a similar occurrence at Bright Senior High School in the Eastern region during a previous WASSCE examination.

It is imperative that the authorities thoroughly investigate this matter and take appropriate action to ensure the safety of teachers and uphold the integrity of examinations. Acts of violence against educators are unacceptable and undermine the fundamental principles of education.

We stand in solidarity with the teachers affected by this appalling act and urge for swift justice and measures to prevent such incidents from happening again. Our thoughts are with the entire school community as they navigate this distressing situation.
