Govt terminates FGR Bogoso and Prestea mining leases

We have received news of the termination of the mining leases of FGR Bogoso Prestea Mining Limited by the government. This decision comes after careful consideration of recommendations from the Minerals Commission and the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice.

In a statement released by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, it was revealed that FGR had been cautioned in August 2023 regarding breaches in its mining operations. The Minerals Commission had advised the company to remedy these breaches.

The decision to terminate the mining leases was made after a thorough review of various reports from the Minerals Commission and a Ministerial Committee that was set up to assess the operations of the company. Extensive engagement with all stakeholders involved in this matter also informed this decision.

This announcement follows a series of protests and concerns raised by various stakeholders, including the Ghana Mine Workers Union. Over 400 members of the union staged a protest at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, calling for the termination of FGR Bogoso Prestea’s mining leases. The union highlighted issues such as poor working conditions and the company’s failure to address critical operational issues, including meeting its debt obligations.

Minister Jinapor emphasized the government’s commitment to the efficient, effective, and sustainable exploitation and management of the country's natural resources. He reassured the public of the government's dedication to transparency, integrity, and good faith in ensuring that the benefits of Ghana’s natural resources are realized for the people of Ghana.

It is clear that this decision has been made with careful consideration and in the best interest of all stakeholders involved. We will continue to monitor developments in this matter and hope for a resolution that upholds the principles of transparency and accountability in the management of natural resources.
