The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced its intention to hold nationwide demonstrations on September 17, 2024, in response to concerns regarding the handling of discrepancies in the voter register by the Electoral Commission (EC).
The decision to stage these demonstrations stems from the party's observations during the recent voter exhibition exercise, where they uncovered several irregularities in the register. Subsequently, the NDC engaged in discussions with the EC to address these concerns and requested a forensic audit of the register. However, their request was denied by the EC.
Following the submission of presidential nomination forms on behalf of John Mahama, NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah informed the media of the party's plan to organize a nationwide protest.
On September 17, demonstrators will converge at regional EC offices in all 16 regional capitals. Furthermore, national executives will formally present a petition at the EC's headquarters in Accra.
Asiedu Nketiah underscored the significance of the demonstrations, stating, "On the 17th of this month [September], the NDC is embarking on a massive nationwide demonstration in all 16 regional capitals, descend on the electoral commission officers and we in Accra will descend to the headquarters and present further petitions as to why we think that they should conduct themselves in a manner that will guarantee peaceful, free and fair election."
The NDC's decision to stage nationwide demonstrations reflects their commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness in the electoral process. It also serves as a demonstration of their dedication to upholding democratic principles and advocating for accountability within the electoral system.
