Abandoned patient at Ojobi: Health Ministry refers alleged medical misconduct to CID

We have recently been made aware of a distressing case of alleged medical misconduct at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, located in the Central Region. The Ministry of Health has taken swift and decisive action by escalating this matter to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Attorney General’s Department.

This decision comes in the wake of an investigation conducted by the Ghana Health Service (GHS), which uncovered serious misconduct by certain hospital officials in connection to the unfortunate passing of a patient who had been transferred to Ojobi, where she was reportedly left unattended until her untimely demise.

A statement released by the Ministry of Health on Wednesday, October 2, revealed that the GHS investigation found that the employees involved failed to act appropriately, thereby contributing to the tragic outcome. As a result, the committee overseeing the inquiry recommended internal disciplinary actions against the staff implicated. However, given the gravity of the incident and the resulting loss of life, the Ministry of Health has opted for further investigations.

In order to ensure thorough accountability and justice, the Ministry has sought the assistance of the Attorney General’s Department to determine the culpability of the staff members involved and to pursue any necessary legal action. Furthermore, the matter has been reported to the CID for criminal investigation.

It is imperative to emphasize that the Ministry of Health remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the highest standards of healthcare delivery. We are resolute in our pledge to take all necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such tragic incidents in the future.

We understand the profound impact that incidents of this nature can have on individuals and communities, and we assure the public that we are dedicated to addressing this matter with the utmost seriousness it deserves. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.

We will continue to provide updates on this matter as it unfolds, and we are unwavering in our dedication to ensuring that all individuals receive the quality healthcare they deserve.
