Obetsebi Lamptey roundabout to be fenced to curb unauthorized activities – Engineer

The Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange in Accra is set to be inaugurated on Friday, November 29, marking a significant milestone in efforts to alleviate the chronic traffic congestion that has long plagued the area. As part of the project’s completion, the Resident Engineer overseeing the initiative, Owusu Sekyere Antwi, has announced key measures to ensure the interchange fulfills its intended purpose effectively.

One of the critical steps being implemented is the erection of a protective fence around the roundabout leading to Kaneshie. This initiative aims to address unauthorised activities such as hawking and other disruptive behaviours that could compromise the functionality and aesthetics of the newly constructed interchange.

In an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, November 28, Mr. Antwi emphasized the importance of maintaining order around the interchange. "Maintaining order is critical to achieving the purpose of this project," he stated. He also highlighted lessons learned from similar projects, such as the Flower Pot Interchange, where managing hawker activities has proven to be a significant challenge. By taking proactive measures, the team behind the Obetsebi Lamptey project seeks to avoid these issues.

Beyond the fencing, additional enhancements are planned to enrich the area’s functionality and cultural significance. One notable feature includes the restoration of the Obetsebi Lamptey statue, which was temporarily removed during construction. "We will be restoring the statue so that people can visit and learn about its history," Mr. Antwi shared. Furthermore, walkways will be constructed to ensure pedestrian safety and prevent vehicles from encroaching on pedestrian spaces.

The Resident Engineer also provided advice for commuters navigating the area during this final phase of construction. He urged travelers to avoid using the Circle to Kaneshie route due to ongoing roadworks and heavy traffic. "The traffic situation has been challenging this week as we complete works on the roundabout. We recommend using alternative routes such as behind the cemetery towards the TV Africa road," he advised.

The completion of the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange represents a significant step forward in addressing traffic congestion and improving urban mobility in Accra. With measures in place to maintain order and enhance accessibility, this project demonstrates a commitment to sustainable infrastructure development that prioritizes both functionality and community well-being.

As residents eagerly await the official inauguration, this landmark project serves as a reminder of the importance of thoughtful planning and proactive management in delivering infrastructure that stands the test of time.
