The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is demanding justice and compensation for a teacher who was brutally stabbed in the left eye by a loitering student at Asuoso Senior High School in Offinso, Ashanti Region. The teacher, Ishmael Famous, was reportedly attacked after he asked the student to enter the classroom. The assault resulted in the teacher losing his eye, leaving him with a life-altering disability.
GNAT General Secretary, Thomas Musah, expressed outrage over the incident, stating that the law demands compensation for individuals injured while performing their lawful duties. He emphasized the teacher's right to Workmen's Compensation, a legal provision that ensures financial support for workers who suffer injuries on the job.
Mr. Musah also condemned attempts to downplay the severity of the incident and warned that inaction by authorities would lead to teachers withdrawing their services when students return from the Christmas break. He highlighted the devastating impact of the injury on Mr. Famous's career, stating that "Looking at the profession, you need your eyes to work with."
The GNAT General Secretary called on the police to prosecute the student responsible for the assault and urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure that Mr. Famous receives the necessary compensation and medical care. He stressed the importance of supporting teachers to effectively discharge their duties, emphasizing that "Teachers are not animals. We are saying what has happened is unacceptable and we shall react in a way that will shock the nation."
This incident underscores the urgent need for greater safety measures in schools and the importance of protecting teachers from violence. GNAT's demands for justice and compensation are a testament to the organization's commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its members and ensuring that teachers are treated with respect and dignity.
