Earl International Group Gold Ghana Ltd., a large-scale mining company operating in Gbane, has announced the arrest of 23 illegal miners by its private security guards. The arrests occurred in the underground mine area on Wednesday, January 15th, 2025, at Shaft 2, level 2. The suspects were part of a larger group of over 100 galamseyers who infiltrated the mine. They have been handed over to the police for prosecution.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of illegal mining activities at the Earl International mine. The company has faced persistent intrusions since commencing deep underground operations. Management has implemented various mitigation strategies, including regularly sealing illegal mining pits and engaging with community leaders and stakeholders. Despite these efforts, illegal miners continue to target the Earl International concession, viewing it as a prime location for gold ore theft.
This is not an isolated incident. Over 30 illegal miners were arrested in August 2024, and a previous attack resulted in injuries to five security guards. Firibu Salia, Mine Manager of Earl International Group Ghana Gold Ltd., emphasized the significant disruption caused by these intrusions. He stated that the illegal mining activities not only hinder the company's operations but also pose serious safety risks to both the illegal miners themselves and the company's employees. The illegal miners' actions of blasting and destroying support pillars and concrete slabs, deliberately put both themselves and the mine workers at serious risk.
Salia reaffirmed the company's commitment to addressing the situation through legitimate and sustainable means. The continued collaboration with law enforcement and community engagement are key components of this strategy. The persistent nature of the problem underscores the need for a comprehensive approach involving all stakeholders to combat illegal mining and ensure the safety and security of mining operations in the region.
