President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government's commitment to the swift completion and operationalization of the Sewua Hospital in the Ashanti Region. Speaking at the Manhyia Palace during the first Akwasidae celebration of the year on Sunday, January 19th, President Mahama addressed concerns surrounding the 250-bed facility, highlighting its crucial role in alleviating the burden on the overwhelmed Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The President acknowledged KATH's significant role as a major healthcare provider not only for the Ashanti Region but also for surrounding areas. He noted the hospital's current operational strain and the urgent need for renovations. The completion of Sewua Hospital, Mahama explained, will allow for the strategic transfer of patients, creating the necessary space to undertake essential infrastructure upgrades at KATH without disrupting its services.
Addressing the key obstacles hindering Sewua Hospital's functionality, President Mahama stated, “The Sewua Hospital is not operational because there is no electricity, there is no water, and the road to the hospital has not been constructed. I wish to assure you that we will tackle it immediately and make sure that we can open the doors of that hospital so that it will ease the pressure on Komfo Anokye.” He emphasized the importance of decongesting KATH to facilitate the necessary renovations, stating, “It is difficult to do the renovations of Komfo Anokye when the hospital is working at full capacity.”
The Sewua Hospital project has been embroiled in controversy, stemming from its premature commissioning by the previous administration. Euroget De-Invest S.A., the project's contractor, voiced concerns about the hospital's readiness for commissioning due to incomplete key components.
This action sparked public debate and raised questions about the government's commitment to providing fully functional healthcare facilities. President Mahama's pledge aims to address these concerns and ensure the timely delivery of a much-needed healthcare facility for the Ashanti Region.
