Petition Seeks Removal of Ghana's Electoral Commission Chairperson and Deputies

A petition has been submitted to the Office of the President calling for the removal of Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, and three of her deputies.  The petitioner, Ofosu-Appiah Daniel, alleges constitutional violations, citing incompetence, bias, and actions that have reportedly eroded public confidence in the EC.

The petition, submitted on Monday, January 27, 2025, targets Chairperson Jean Mensa, along with the Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Bossman Asare; the Deputy EC Chair in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey; and Dr. Peter Appiahene, a member of the commission's board.  The petitioner invokes Article 146 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution as the legal basis for their removal.

The petition levels serious accusations against the EC leadership, alleging gross misconduct, breaches of human rights, and incompetence in their official duties.  It specifically claims that their actions and inactions have undermined the integrity of the Electoral Commission and violated Articles 42, 46, 23, and 296 of the Constitution.  The petitioner argues that their continued presence in office poses a significant threat to the fairness and integrity of future electoral processes in Ghana.

The petition's detailed allegations remain undisclosed at this time.  However, the gravity of the accusations warrants a thorough investigation by the Office of the President. The outcome of this petition will undoubtedly have significant implications for the future of Ghana's electoral system and public trust in its institutions.  The Office of the President is expected to respond to the petition in due course.  This developing story will be updated as more information becomes available.
