Following a joint petition by the Kloma Gbi and Kloma Hengme youth groups, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has directed Ghana Water Limited (GWL) to provide a timeline for resolving the ongoing water crisis in the Krobo area within five days. The crisis, impacting residents of Sawer, Kodjonya, Odumase South, and Atua South, has persisted for six months due to the disruption of water pipes during the construction of the Somanya-Odumase-Kpong road.
The PURC's directive, issued in a letter dated January 14th and signed by Regional Manager Kesewaa Apenteng-Addo, demands that GWL outline the steps taken or planned to address the water shortage. A PURC team will visit the affected communities to assess the situation firsthand and conduct a community engagement to gather further information.
The youth groups' petition highlighted the significant inconvenience caused by the prolonged lack of potable water. Residents expressed frustration over GWL's perceived indifference to their plight.
Henking A. Adjase-Kodjo, Director of Communications for Kloma Gbi, expressed satisfaction with the PURC's swift response and commended the Regional Manager and her team. He expressed optimism that the issue would be resolved within days.
Dr. Eric Tamatey Lawer, General Secretary of Kloma Hengme, while praising the PURC's action, also urged the commission to investigate the broader issue of inadequate water supply in the Krobo area, advocating for equitable water distribution across the region. He stated, "Equity in the distribution of water to the Krobo area and other towns is what we are asking for." The PURC's intervention offers hope for a swift resolution to the crisis and a long-term solution to the region's water challenges.
