Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has issued a strong call to newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to prioritize the nation's interests above partisan political affiliations. Addressing the new MPs at an orientation program in Accra on Saturday, January 11, 2025, Bagbin stressed the critical need for a unified approach to tackling Ghana's challenges.
"I want to urge you to stay focused and work assiduously towards addressing the challenges facing our nation," Bagbin stated, emphasizing that national interests should supersede party loyalty. He underscored the importance of this focus, stating, "That is the number one, not the [political] party [or] the nation. It is very critical, and those of you who are not observant, please refocus."
Bagbin's address highlighted the long-term career benefits of prioritizing national service. He argued that politicians who consistently place Ghana's needs first tend to enjoy more sustained and successful careers. "Those who really take Ghana first advance in politics than those who are extremely partisan," he explained. "When you are extremely partisan, you may ascend in one regime, but in the next, you will collapse because you are seen to identify yourself with one personality who may be the leader; so, after that leader, you are not relevant again."
The Speaker's remarks come at a crucial time for Ghana, as the new Parliament begins its work. His emphasis on national unity and collaborative governance serves as a vital reminder of the importance of putting the country's needs above individual or party ambitions. Bagbin's words offer a valuable lesson for all political leaders: true success lies not in fleeting partisan victories, but in lasting contributions to the nation's well-being.
