The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) has issued a plea to President Mahama, urging him to expedite the finalization and implementation of their outstanding Conditions of Service. In a statement released by General Secretary King James Azortibah, the union highlighted the urgency of the matter, citing simmering unrest among its members due to the protracted delay.
Azortibah emphasized the pressing need to resolve outstanding issues with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC). These issues pertain to the delayed conclusion and implementation of reviewed Conditions of Service for TEWU members employed across various institutions, including the Ghana Education Service, Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, Ghana Library Authority, and Public and Technical Universities. He characterized the timely resolution of these negotiations as a crucial "gift" the new government could provide its members.
Beyond the Conditions of Service, Azortibah expressed deep concern over the exclusion of TEWU members from university governing councils. He noted that while the statutes establishing public universities clearly outline the composition of these councils, including TEWU representation, some university management officials have disregarded these provisions, leading to the exclusion of TEWU members.
Despite these challenges, Azortibah urged TEWU members to maintain productivity and contribute to the growth of government initiatives. He extended New Year's greetings, wishing members a prosperous 2025 filled with hope, determination, and unity in their pursuit of enhanced productivity and service delivery for national development.
The union also extended its congratulations to President Mahama upon his inauguration. However, Azortibah also issued a call for greater engagement with labor on significant economic policy decisions.
He specifically urged the new government to consult with labor on matters such as the review of the Free Senior High School program, the 1992 Constitution, and the Ghana-IMF deal. This call emphasizes TEWU's commitment to active participation in shaping national policy and underscores the importance of collaboration between the government and labor unions in addressing critical socio-economic issues.
