The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has pledged a significant improvement to Accra's street lighting infrastructure. In a press briefing on Monday, February 3rd, she committed to restoring 70% of the city's faulty streetlights within the next 50 days. This ambitious project aims to enhance security and improve visibility across the capital.
Ocloo emphasized that addressing the issue of malfunctioning streetlights is a top priority. She stated, "In fact, within 50 days in office, all these things should be fixed. I will make sure that at least 70 percent of the streetlights should be fixed." This commitment underscores the new administration's focus on immediate improvements to Accra's essential services. Collaboration with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) will be key to achieving this goal.
Beyond streetlights, Ocloo outlined a broader vision for Accra, highlighting security and sanitation as crucial areas of focus. She announced the reintroduction of the Regional Sanitation Day and the launch of an award scheme for the cleanest city, demonstrating a commitment to tackling the city's sanitation challenges. This initiative aims to incentivize cleanliness and improve the overall living environment for Accra residents.
The Minister also emphasized the importance of supporting municipal and local district assemblies to achieve self-sufficiency. This aligns with the new government's "Resetting Agenda," which aims to empower local governance structures. Furthermore, Ocloo plans to work closely with traditional and religious leaders to foster decentralization and participatory governance, ensuring that community voices are heard and incorporated into decision-making processes.
This collaborative approach suggests a commitment to inclusive governance and community engagement in addressing Accra's challenges. The upcoming 50 days will be a critical period to observe the progress of these initiatives and gauge the effectiveness of the new administration's approach to urban development.
