Nurses and midwives seek government reimbursement for unpaid allowances

The Ghana Nursing and Midwife Trainees' Association (GNMTA) is pleading with the government to take immediate action to resolve the urgent issue of their unpaid allowances, which have been outstanding for more than a year.

According to the Association, the difficulties faced by the trainees who depend on these allowances for their education and well-being have been made worse by the protracted delay.

Pascal Adumbisa, the association's president, stated that the government must act quickly to resolve their problems because it is having a negative impact on them.

"Midwives and nurses have not received their stipend for more than a year. A stipend was given to us in March. That three months were for 2022, not 2023, and the three months that arrived in March were for the same year. For those who had just finished, money were issued for September, October, and November of 2021, but not for June or December.

The three months that were paid for the current trainees on campus were meant to be for 2022, but throughout 2022 they received no compensation other than for these three months. The allowance for nursing and midwifery students helps them in their clinical work. Without these funds, training nurses and midwives, as well as those who have graduated, will be under a great deal of stress and pressure to fend for themselves. This is their right, he said, because the student nurses and midwives perform around 40% of the nation's health duties.
