Ghanaian football fans stage #OccupyGFA protest against GFA

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), currently under the direction of Kurt Okraku, is being protested by a group of football supporters in Ghana.

This demonstration, known as #OccupyGFA, aims to express discontent with the current state of football governance in the country, citing concerns about transparency and fairness in the administration.

The protest is orchestrated by a group known as the Ghana Football Stakeholders Forum, with prominent figures like Abraham Boakye, known as ‘One Man Supporter,’ and Charles Ntim, known as ‘Mickey Charles,’ at the forefront.

In an effort to raise their voices, the protesters are marching to the GFA Secretariat in Accra. The words "GFA is not Dreams! " and "FIFA and CAF must speak and act now!" are among those on banners that many people are brandishing. Get away, Kurt!" These chants express the protesters' worries that Kurt Okraku may be seen as favoring Dreams FC, the team he formerly served as Executive Chairman before being elected as the GFA president in 2019.

Okraku has been accused of bias and favoritism within the GFA due to his continued association with Dreams FC despite leaving from his position as the club's executive chairman.

However, the GFA stated on Monday that its Secretariat would relocate to Tamale in time for Thursday's Elective Congress. Since George Afriyie was disqualified from running for president, Kurt Okraku is the only candidate left in the race.

The GFA is still holding the elections despite legal obstacles. On October 12, 2023, both Afriyie and the club King Faisal are due to have their respective requests for an injunction to halt the procedure heard. In addition, Afriyie has appealed his disqualification to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
