"I will enhance the fishing industry if I become president in 2024 - Mahama

Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has expressed strong disapproval of the government's handling of premix fuel distribution, labeling it as a politically motivated endeavor.

Engagement in Axim

During an engagement with fisherfolk in Axim, as part of his "Building the Ghana We Want" tour, Mahama listened to the concerns of the locals who lamented the lack of access to premix fuel for fishing activities. In response, he pointed a finger at the ruling government, holding them responsible for the disruption of artisanal fishers' work.

Measures Implemented During His Tenure

Mahama recalled the measures implemented during his tenure, such as the establishment of the landing beach committee, which ensured fair and efficient distribution of premix fuel. However, he expressed dismay at the current state of affairs, citing fuel diversion and mismanagement as prevalent issues. He went on to assert that the politicization of premix fuel distribution has reached alarming levels under the current administration.

Pledge for the Future

Looking towards the future, Mahama pledged his commitment to revitalizing the fisheries sector if elected in the upcoming general elections. He assured the fisherfolk that a potential NDC government would bring about substantial improvements, vowing to appoint a competent sector minister dedicated to driving positive change within the industry.

In a separate event during his tour in Takoradi, residents showed their support for Mahama's "24-hour economy" campaign policy, further endorsing his vision for a transformed and dynamic national economy.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, Mahama's stance on the politicization of premix fuel distribution underscores the critical role of non-partisan governance in addressing the needs of vital sectors such as fisheries. With the upcoming elections on the horizon, his promises to prioritize and elevate the fisheries industry will undoubtedly be closely watched by stakeholders and citizens alike.
