The recent deportation of Shalimar Abbiusi, spokesperson for the New Force political movement, to her native Belgium has sparked accusations of unfair treatment and human rights violations. This move comes after the state dropped the charge of obtaining a student permit with false declaration and subsequently rearrested her.
Ms. Abbiusi's lawyers had accused the Ghana Immigration Service of seeking to deport her as a reason for the withdrawal of the charge. However, the service explained that a decision was yet to be taken on her fate.
Lead counsel for Ms. Abbiusi, Francis Xavier Sosu, confirmed her deportation and described the mode of her deportation as an affront to her fundamental human rights. He expressed concern over the manner in which she was escorted to board the Brussels Airline to Belgium, stating that it was shameful and disgraceful. He highlighted that there was no deportation order by the Minister, but an Executive Instrument was used to facilitate her deportation.
Sosu further emphasized that holding Ms. Abbiusi and denying her access to her lawyers and family, as well as escorting her with men in uniform, amounted to a violation of her rights. He pointed out that when her visa was revoked and she was instructed to leave the jurisdiction within 24 hours, she could have moved to Togo or any other location of her choosing.
The circumstances surrounding Ms. Abbiusi's deportation raise concerns about adherence to due process and respect for human rights. It is essential for authorities to ensure that individuals are treated fairly and in accordance with legal procedures, particularly in cases that involve potential deportation.
The deportation of Shalimar Abbiusi has brought attention to the need for transparency and adherence to legal standards in immigration-related matters. It is imperative that such cases are handled with utmost respect for the rights of the individuals involved, in line with international human rights principles.
