TUSAAG declares a nationwide strike starting on January 8th

The Technical University Senior Administrators’ Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) has announced a nationwide strike set to commence on Monday, January 8, 2024. This action comes as a result of the association's demand for full compliance with the retirement roll-over date.

Expressing deep concern, TUSAAG highlighted the apparent lack of response from the management of certain Technical Universities despite numerous engagements aimed at addressing the issues raised by their members.

In a statement released on January 1, TUSAAG specifically pointed out the failure of management at Accra Technical University (ATU) and Koforidua Technical University (KTU) to implement the roll-over conditions for qualified personnel. This failure has resulted in the premature termination of employment for affected staff members.

TUSAAG's statement emphasized, "Despite the clarity provided in all our earlier communication, the Management of Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU), Sunyani Technical University (STU), Accra Technical University (ATU), and Koforidua Technical University (KTU) have failed to comply fully with the roll-over of the retirement date to the end of the academic year."

Furthermore, citing Section 159 (b) of the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651), TUSAAG declared a nationwide strike effective Monday, 8th January 2024, as a means to demand full compliance with the conditions of the roll-over of the retirement date as outlined in the relevant sections of the Conditions of Service.

This development underscores the significance of addressing labor-related concerns in a timely and comprehensive manner. It is imperative for all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue with the aim of finding a mutually beneficial resolution.

As this situation unfolds, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize open communication and earnest efforts towards reaching a satisfactory agreement. The impact of this strike could have far-reaching consequences, underscoring the importance of swift and effective action to address the grievances raised by TUSAAG.

The outcome of these negotiations will not only affect the administrators and technical staff but also have broader implications for the smooth functioning of the Technical Universities in Ghana. It is essential for all parties to approach this issue with a spirit of cooperation and a commitment to finding a resolution that upholds the rights and well-being of all involved.

The announcement of a nationwide strike by TUSAAG serves as a clear indication of the urgency and gravity of the issues at hand. It is incumbent upon all parties to engage in meaningful dialogue and work towards a swift and equitable resolution that aligns with the best interests of the technical university community in Ghana.
