Anti-gay bill will harm Ghana's public health and economy - United States

The recent passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-gay bill, by Ghana’s Parliament has raised concerns from the United States of America. The bill, which criminalizes LGBTQI+ individuals and those who support them, has prompted a statement from US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller.

In the statement, Miller expressed deep concern over the potential impact of the bill on Ghana’s constitutionally protected freedoms of speech, press, and assembly. He emphasized that the bill’s passage would not only undermine the rights of LGBTQI+ individuals but also have far-reaching consequences for all Ghanaians.

Furthermore, the US State Department highlighted the potential negative effects of the bill on Ghana’s public health, media, civic spaces, and economy. It was noted that such discriminatory legislation could hinder business and economic growth in the country, as international business coalitions have already voiced their concerns.

The statement also underscored the importance of upholding Ghana’s tradition of tolerance, peace, and respect for human rights, which has long been admired as a model for other countries. The passage of this bill, if it becomes law, would be inconsistent with these values and could undermine Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of stability and prosperity.

In light of these concerns, the United States has echoed the calls from within Ghana for a review of the bill’s constitutionality to ensure that the rights of all individuals in Ghana are protected.

It is clear that the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has sparked international apprehension, and it remains to be seen how this will impact Ghana’s standing on the global stage.
