Korle Klottey Assembly to desilt drains and demolish structures ahead of rainy season

In preparation for the upcoming rainy season, the Municipal Chief Executive for Korle Klottey, Nii Adjei Tawiah, has affirmed the commitment of his office to execute plans aimed at desilting drains and removing structures situated on waterways.

Recent efforts by the Assembly have seen the undertaking of demolition exercises, particularly in areas prone to flooding, with the objective of mitigating the risk of floods, despite facing opposition from affected individuals.

In an interview with Citi News, Nii Adjei Tawiah emphasized that these initiatives form part of a series of clean-up activities organized by his office. He urged residents to embrace the necessity of such demolition exercises and encouraged their active participation in drainage initiatives.

Addressing the resistance often encountered during demolition exercises, Mr. Tawiah noted, "Sometimes, people don’t appreciate it because as far as they are concerned, it’s a neighbour living in those kiosks and unauthorized structures, and they don’t see why we should come in to destroy them. However, prevention is better than cure."

Furthermore, Mr. Tawiah expressed appreciation for citizens who independently engage in clean-up exercises and assured them of consistent support from the Assembly. He highlighted the provision of tools and assistance in the disposal of waste collected from drainage systems as part of the ongoing support for community-led initiatives.

As the community braces itself for the rainy season, these proactive measures underscore the importance of collaborative efforts in safeguarding lives and properties from the potential impact of flooding. The commitment of the Municipal Assembly to prioritize pre-emptive actions and support citizen-led initiatives is crucial in fostering a resilient and prepared community.

The assurance of ongoing support from the Municipal Chief Executive serves as an encouragement for residents to actively participate in efforts geared towards maintaining a clean and safe environment. With a collective sense of responsibility and cooperation, the community can effectively mitigate the challenges posed by the rainy season and work towards a more sustainable and secure future.
