Phase II of the Agavedzi-Blekusu Sea Defense Project in Ketu South has commenced to address the perennial tidal wave attacks threatening coastal communities in the region. The Parliamentary Select Committee on Works and Housing, at the behest of the Speaker of Parliament, revealed this significant development during a recent visit.
The initiative was prompted by concerns raised by Members of Parliament from the coastal constituencies of Ketu South, Keta, and Anlo, emphasizing the urgency to protect the coastline from potential extinction.
Mr. Isaac Asiamah, Chairman of the Committee, announced that the government has secured US$150 million for the project in the constituency and other coastal communities. He assured that plans for phase II are underway and emphasized the importance of expediting the proposed 8km project, which includes ancillary facilities such as a cold store, fishing market, and clinic, estimated at 83 million dollars. Mr. Asiamah underscored the capital-intensive nature of the project, emphasizing its significance in safeguarding lives, property, and Ghana's cultural heritage.
Highlighting the lack of progress since the Committee's previous visit two years ago, Mr. Asiamah stressed the critical need to address the situation promptly to prevent the loss of a valuable resource with potential for tourism and transportation.
Mr. Vincent Oppong Asamoah, Ranking Member of the Committee, emphasized the need for prioritizing the protection of coastal communities to prevent further devastation.
Expressing concern over the estimated cost of the defense project, Mr. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, a Member of the Committee, called for prudent resource utilization to extend protection along a larger stretch of the coastline.
Welcoming the news of secured funds for the project, Mr. Kenneth Kpedor, President of Anlo Youth Council, acknowledged the long-overdue development as a significant step forward in safeguarding coastal communities. He urged the government to provide detailed information on funding allocation and project timelines to enhance public trust and enable effective progress monitoring.
In conclusion, the commencement of phase II of the Agavedzi-Blekusu Sea Defense Project underscores the government's commitment to protecting coastal communities from environmental threats. It is imperative to ensure efficient resource allocation and transparent communication to achieve timely completion and accountability in this crucial endeavor.
