Dunkwa on Offin residents decry bad state of bridge

The residents of Dunkwa on Offin in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality have expressed deep concern regarding the deteriorating state of the Dunkwa bridge, which serves as a crucial link to adjoining regions such as Ashanti, Western, and parts of the Central Region.

The residents have pointed out that the frequent use of the bridge by heavy mining trucks has significantly contributed to the weakening of its foundation. There is a growing fear that if immediate attention is not given to the bridge, it may soon collapse.

As one of the busiest and major bridges in the Upper Denkyira East enclave, the Dunkwa bridge plays a vital role in facilitating transportation, particularly in the area's significant mining activities. However, it has been observed that the bridge often shakes when vehicles pass over it, and the situation worsens when heavy trucks carrying timber and mining equipment ply the bridge, further compromising its structural integrity.

Concerned road users and residents have called upon the government to prioritize expansion works on the stretch leading to the bridge. They have emphasized that the current size of the bridge is inadequate for accommodating the increasing traffic of heavy trucks, especially due to its small stature.

Furthermore, there have been reports of encroachment on the Dunkwa On Offin river by illegal small-scale miners (galamseyers), who utilize large machinery that further undermines the foundation of the bridge. This encroachment has raised questions about the overall stability of the bridge, with residents fearing that if prompt measures are not taken, it may eventually lead to a collapse, consequently isolating residents from neighboring regions.

In response to these concerns, the Municipal Chief Executive for Upper Denkyira East, Ebenezer Appiah Forson, has indicated that efforts have been made to engage the maintenance department of the Ghana Highway Authority. There is a consideration for the construction of a new bridge as a viable alternative to address the pressing issues surrounding the Dunkwa bridge.

In light of these developments, it is imperative for all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring the safety and sustainability of critical infrastructure such as the Dunkwa bridge. The timely intervention and proactive measures will not only safeguard the connectivity of communities but also uphold the economic activities reliant on efficient transportation networks.
