Kumasi firefighters have successfully extinguished a major fire that ravaged parts of the Adum area, concluding a grueling 48-hour firefighting operation. The Ashanti Regional Fire Command led the effort to contain the blaze, which resulted in significant damage to shops and businesses, leaving numerous traders with substantial losses.
Despite facing intense heat and difficult structural challenges, firefighters worked relentlessly to bring the inferno under control, earning praise from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS). A statement from the GNFS lauded their dedication, stating, "Well done Ashanti Regional Fire Command. You have done what Napoleon couldn’t do."
The operation wasn't without its hurdles. At one point, operations were temporarily suspended to allow excavators to clear access routes, improving the firefighters' ability to reach the affected areas.
However, the incident was marred by controversy surrounding comments made by Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene. A viral video shows the Minister instructing firefighters to relocate their engines, seemingly objecting to a standby water tanker.
This action drew sharp criticism from Ashanti Regional Fire Commander ACFO II Peter Tetteh, who described the Minister's remarks as "unfair and unfortunate," highlighting their demoralizing effect on the exhausted firefighters. "We should be commended; we have done so well and should be motivated to keep working. This incident is overwhelming, we have been fighting this fire for 24 hours without sleep. We should be applauded and encouraged," ACFO II Tetteh stated.
Adding to the condemnation, Acting Chief Fire Officer Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong strongly denounced attacks on firefighters during the incident. She confirmed that investigations are underway to identify and hold accountable those who obstructed emergency responders. "Understanding the challenges firefighters face will foster greater public support for fire safety efforts and help prevent future incidents," she emphasized. She also assured that full medical support would be provided to two injured firefighters and a civilian injured during the incident.
Authorities have cautioned the public to avoid compromised structures in the affected area, citing concerns about structural integrity. ACFO II Tetteh urged city authorities to promptly implement recommendations from the upcoming fire incident report to prevent similar catastrophes in the future. The incident highlights the need for improved infrastructure, better access for emergency services, and a greater appreciation for the dedication and challenges faced by firefighters in the line of duty.
