Accra-Winneba Highway caves in at Okyereko after diversion of River by contractor

We regret to inform the public of a significant disruption along the Accra-Winneba Highway, as a result of the diversion of the Ayensu River by a contractor working on the Kasoa-Cape Coast Highway. This diversion has led to the collapse of a section of the main highway, causing immense inconvenience to commuters and residents in the area.

The aftermath of this diversion has resulted in the formation of a substantial gulley across the highway, effectively halting vehicular traffic and leaving many stranded. The impact of this development has been particularly severe, with over 150 houses in Gomoa Mampong being flooded as a direct consequence.

The diversion has also affected a bridge spanning the River Ayensu, which serves as a critical link between the Eastern Region and the Accra-Cape Coast Highway at Gomoa Okyereko in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.

In light of these events, urgent measures are required to address the damage caused and to mitigate the impact on the affected communities. It is imperative that swift restoration works be undertaken to repair the broken road and bridge. Additionally, there is a need for thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the diversion and appropriate sanctions should be applied to the responsible contractor.

We spoke with Robert Hackman, the Gomoa East District Director for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NaDMO), who emphasized the importance of using alternative routes at Winneba while restoration efforts are being carried out.

This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of adhering to proper procedures and precautions in construction projects, particularly those involving natural waterways. The safety and well-being of communities must always remain paramount in such endeavors.

We urge all commuters and residents in the affected areas to exercise caution and patience during this challenging period. Our thoughts are with those impacted by this disruption, and we remain hopeful that swift and effective measures will be implemented to restore normalcy to the region.
