The Police Hospital in Accra has announced plans to conduct a mass burial for approximately 200 unclaimed bodies currently stored in its mortuary. The burial, scheduled for the first quarter of 2025, aims to alleviate overcrowding and improve storage conditions within the facility.
Relatives of missing persons are urged to contact the hospital's pathology department immediately to identify and claim any deceased family members. A strict deadline of February 28th, 2025, has been set. Any bodies remaining unclaimed after this date will be included in the mass burial.
This action follows a similar trend among other hospitals grappling with the issue of unclaimed bodies. The Police Hospital in Bogoso, Western Region, has already scheduled a mass burial for seven unclaimed bodies that have been in its morgue for twenty months. Similarly, Tema General Hospital is also planning a mass burial due to capacity issues in its morgue.
The Police Hospital in Accra is appealing to the public to disseminate this information widely to ensure that families have the opportunity to claim their loved ones before the scheduled burial. The hospital emphasizes the importance of timely identification and retrieval of bodies to provide a dignified final resting place for the deceased.
