The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations has ordered the immediate shutdown of several radio stations operating illegally across Ghana. The directive, issued to the Acting Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA), targets six entities found to be broadcasting without valid frequency authorisations, a violation of Section 2(4) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775).
The affected stations are:
- Fire Group of Companies, Sunyani – 90.1MHz
- I-Zar Consult Limited, Tamale – 89.7MHz
- Abochannel Media Group, Adidome – 105.7MHz
- Okyeame Radio Limited, Bibiani – 99.7MHz
- Mumen Bono Foundation, Techiman – 99.7MHz
- Osikani Community FM, Nkrankwanta – 99.7MHz
According to a statement released by the Communications Ministry on Tuesday, February 18th, these stations failed to meet their legal obligations. This includes failure to renew authorisations, outstanding payments, and the non-submission of required documentation within the given deadlines. Consequently, their authorisations have expired, making their continued operation illegal.
The NCA is tasked with enforcing the law and will take immediate action to cease all unauthorized transmissions. The Ministry emphasized that operating a broadcasting service without a valid frequency authorisation is a direct violation of Act 775 and will not be tolerated.
This action is part of an ongoing review of frequency authorisations. The Ministry assures the public that further directives will be issued as the review progresses. All licensed broadcasters are urged to ensure full compliance with the terms of their authorisations to avoid similar enforcement actions. The government's commitment to regulating the broadcasting sector and ensuring compliance with the law is clear.
