All mortuaries to shut down from Sep 26 as workers strike

We regret to inform the public that the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has made the difficult decision to close all mortuaries across the country, effective Thursday, September 26, 2024. This announcement comes as a result of an indefinite strike initiated by the workers due to unresolved issues with their employer.

One of the primary concerns raised by the workers is the failure of their employer to meet long-standing demands. These demands include the provision of adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and the payment of salary arrears dating back to 2020. Additionally, the workers are seeking financial clearance for the employment of 500 additional mortuary workers, as well as the payment of the COVID-19 bonus promised to them by the President.

The decision to strike has been prompted by what the workers perceive as deliberate inaction from the authorities in addressing their grievances. MOWAG has also expressed serious concern about the alarming rate of deaths among mortuary workers, which they attribute to poor working conditions. They are calling for urgent action to address these issues.

In a notice issued by MOWAG, it was made clear that no further hearings or discussions would take place until their demands are implemented. Furthermore, all members have been directed to close mortuaries and stay at home, and the general public has been informed to expect the closure.

It is anticipated that this strike will have a significant impact on mortuary services across the country if the demands of the workers are not met before the stipulated deadline.

We urge all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue and work towards a swift resolution that addresses the legitimate concerns of the mortuary workers. The closure of mortuaries underscores the urgency of the situation, and it is imperative that steps are taken to ensure the well-being of the workers and the uninterrupted provision of essential services to the public.

We will continue to monitor developments related to this strike and provide updates as they become available.
