Election 2024: Protest against EC aims to ensure peaceful electoral process – Mahama

In a recent community engagement as part of the second phase of his Greater Accra regional tour, John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), addressed the party's decision to protest against the Electoral Commission (EC). The NDC has expressed concerns about the accuracy of the voters' register, citing potential discrepancies that could compromise the integrity of the upcoming December 7 elections.

Mahama emphasized the importance of a credible and transparent register to ensure a fair electoral process and called upon Ghanaians to support the NDC's stance on this matter. He clarified that the party's issues with the Electoral Commission are not personal but rather rooted in the desire for peace during and after the election. The goal is to ensure that all stakeholders have confidence in the electoral process.

"It is because we want peace during and after the election," Mahama stated. "So when we raise issues about the electoral process, it is because we want the EC to sit up and do its job so that all of us can have confidence in the electoral process."

He further explained that pressuring the EC to fulfill its responsibilities is essential in achieving a peaceful election. As a demonstration of this commitment, Mahama announced plans for a demonstration at the EC office on the 17th of the month, inviting all Ghanaians who are willing to join in advocating for a properly conducted electoral process.

"The only way we can get the EC to do its job is to pressure the EC to do it," Mahama emphasized. "And that is why on the 17th of this month, that is next Tuesday, we are doing a demonstration at the EC office. And that demonstration is not only NDC, it is all Ghanaians who are willing to join the demonstration so that we go and tell EC to sit up and do its work properly so that we have a peaceful election. That’s the purpose of that demonstration."

Mahama's call for a peaceful and transparent electoral process reflects the NDC's commitment to upholding democratic principles in Ghana. It underscores the party's dedication to ensuring that the upcoming elections are conducted with integrity and fairness. As citizens prepare to exercise their right to vote, it is imperative that all stakeholders work together to uphold the credibility of the electoral process.
