Buduburam: Three dead, over 30 injured following rock blasting by construction company

We are deeply saddened to report on the tragic incident that occurred on the Buduburam stretch of the Accra-Winneba highway. A construction company working on the road conducted a rock blast, resulting in extensive damage and devastating consequences.

Regrettably, three individuals have lost their lives, and over 30 people have sustained injuries of varying degrees as a result of this incident. The rock blast, which lasted for a few minutes, was carried out after several vehicles on the stretch were halted to facilitate the activity.

It is disheartening to note that this is not the first instance of rocks being blasted on the Budumburam section of the highways, as reported by residents of the area. They have highlighted that the blasting of the rock often leads to the destruction of roofing sheets of houses around the Big Apple area during construction work.

Following the incident, some residents expressed their anger by attacking workers of the company responsible for the construction on that stretch. Furthermore, it has come to our attention that a Chinese man who is leading the team has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The injured have been promptly taken to the St Gregory Hospital in Buduburam for medical attention. According to the Hospital administrator, Mattias Ayegre-Anaba, a total of 42 individuals were brought to the hospital, with 18 females and nine males currently admitted. Tragically, three individuals have succumbed to their injuries, while efforts are underway to transfer others to different medical facilities for specialized care.

This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to strict safety measures in construction activities. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims, and we hope for the swift recovery of those who have been injured. We urge all relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident to prevent such tragedies in the future.
