Cocoa Carriers Association commences indefinite sit-down strike today

In response to unresolved issues surrounding their conditions of service, the Cocoa Carriers Association has announced an indefinite sit-down strike scheduled to commence on Monday, October 7, 2024, at the Tema, Takoradi, and Kumasi depots of the Cocoa Marketing Company Limited (CMC).

This decision comes as a result of the association's ongoing efforts to address concerns related to their working conditions. The National Chairman of the Cocoa Carriers Association, Raymond Atanga Abobiga, emphasized the association's commitment to seeing their demands fully addressed.

Notably, this is the second instance of industrial action taken by the association in recent years. In 2022, a similar strike led to significant disruptions in the supply chain as thousands of cocoa bags were left unattended at CMC warehouses.

In a recent interview on Citi News, Mr. Abobiga reiterated the association's stance, stating, "We are going to report at work but will be at the gate of the various warehouses and then we are not going to work until they attend to our needs and our demands."

It is important to highlight that the Cocoa Carriers Association's objectives are focused on achieving fair treatment for its members, with Mr. Abobiga emphasizing that their fight is not targeted at individuals but rather a pursuit of just and equitable conditions.

As this situation unfolds, it is crucial for all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue to seek a resolution that addresses the concerns of the Cocoa Carriers Association while ensuring the continuity of operations within the cocoa industry.

We will continue to monitor developments related to this strike and its potential impact on the cocoa supply chain, and we encourage all parties involved to work towards a mutually beneficial resolution.
