Galamsey: We’ll proceed with nationwide strike – Organised Labour

In light of recent developments, Organised Labour has officially confirmed its decision to proceed with the nationwide strike scheduled for Thursday, October 10, 2024. This decision comes after the group expressed dissatisfaction with President Akufo-Addo’s response to their demands, despite his reaffirmed commitment to addressing the illegal mining issue.

For some time now, Organised Labour has been urging the president to declare a state of emergency on illegal mining and implement long-term solutions to combat this pressing issue. However, their calls have not been adequately addressed, leading to the decision to proceed with the planned strike.

Speaking to the media on Monday, October 7, the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Joshua Ansah, reiterated the union’s determination to go ahead with the strike unless significant action is taken by the government before the ultimatum. He emphasized that the government's proposed measures do not sufficiently address their demands, thus reaffirming their decision to proceed with the strike.

However, it is important to note that tensions have arisen within Organised Labour, as some factions, particularly from the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) and other groups, claim they were not consulted before the announcement of the strike. A faction identifying themselves as “Concerned Members of Organised Labour” has voiced opposition to how the strike decision was communicated. While they support the fight against illegal mining, they believe that the leadership’s approach to declaring the strike was improper.

This group is calling on Organised Labour’s leadership to suspend the strike and engage in further dialogue with the government. Dr. Solomon Fokuo, a member of TUTAG, expressed these concerns, emphasizing that if the leadership had shown the same level of commitment to addressing the welfare of their members, the situation could have been handled more effectively.

It is evident that there are differing perspectives within Organised Labour regarding the decision to proceed with the strike. While some remain resolute in their stance, others are calling for a reevaluation of the approach taken. The need for unity and consensus within Organised Labour is crucial in effectively addressing the challenges at hand.

As this situation continues to unfold, it is imperative for all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue and seek common ground for the betterment of all stakeholders. The issues at the heart of this matter are significant and require a collaborative effort to find sustainable solutions.

The coming days will undoubtedly shed more light on the developments surrounding this issue. It is our hope that all parties involved will prioritize open communication and cooperation in navigating through this critical juncture.
