Democracy Hub demo: We didn’t attack the police – Barker-Vormawor

In a recent interview with TV3’s Kemini Amanor, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, leader of the Democracy Hub demonstration, made some striking allegations against the police regarding their handling of the protest. Barker-Vormawor accused the police of deliberately churning out sensational videos to fit their own narrative of the events that transpired during the demonstration.

According to Barker-Vormawor, the police strategically released isolated cases of what they deemed as violent incidents during the protest in order to create an impression that multiple acts of violence had taken place. He claimed that these videos were repeatedly circulated to condition the atmosphere and steer the conversation towards a focus on violence rather than the actual issues being protested.

Furthermore, Barker-Vormawor highlighted the impact of using such sensationalized videos, stating that it detracts from the core conversation of the protest. He emphasized that protesters are not inherently violent and that the use of such videos skews the perception of the public and media, leading to a disproportionate focus on the alleged violence rather than the underlying issues.

Addressing specific incidents, Barker-Vormawor mentioned the video of himself taking the keys from a police van, clarifying that it was not an attack but rather a deliberate act related to the protest. He also criticized the police for repeatedly looping videos of isolated incidents, creating a skewed representation of the overall events.

It is important to note that Barker-Vormawor was arrested during a demonstration against illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, which has had detrimental environmental effects in Ghana. The specific details of his alleged misconduct are still under investigation, as reported by the police.

These allegations shed light on the complexities surrounding protests and the portrayal of events by different parties involved. It underscores the importance of responsible and balanced reporting, as well as the need to critically analyze the information presented during such events.

As this situation continues to unfold, it is crucial to consider multiple perspectives and await further developments before drawing conclusions. The handling of protests and demonstrations requires a nuanced approach that respects the rights of all parties involved while upholding law and order.
