We are witnessing a concerning situation involving the Asuogyaman Education Directorate and the headmaster of Akwamuman Senior High School, which has prompted the Ghana National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) to take action.
NAGRAT has issued a five-day ultimatum demanding the immediate reinstatement of the July/August salaries for certain teachers. This ultimatum comes in response to allegations of punitive measures taken by Headmaster Anim-Addo Asuoko, who reportedly withheld the salaries of several teachers as a penalty for their non-attendance at a Professional Learning Community (PLC) session.
It is important to note that NAGRAT has raised valid concerns regarding the actions of the headmaster. They argue that such punitive measures overstep the authority provided under the Ghana Education Service’s code of conduct. The code of conduct does not authorize salary suspensions or mandatory apology letters for teachers who miss PLC meetings.
The Professional Learning Community (PLC) initiative, which was introduced approximately eight years ago, aims to support teachers’ continuous professional development, improve their skills, and earn them credit points. However, it is crucial to emphasize that attendance at these sessions should not affect teachers' salaries.
It is evident that there is a need for a fair and reasonable approach to addressing issues related to professional development and attendance at PLC sessions. NAGRAT's ultimatum serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding the rights and well-being of teachers within the education system.
As we await further developments, it is our hope that a resolution can be reached swiftly and amicably, ensuring that the affected teachers receive the rightful reinstatement of their salaries. We will continue to monitor this situation closely and provide updates as they unfold.
